I started off as many new loc wearers do, very particular about my locs. I was babying them (retwisting gently, covering my head every night, etc). One day my sister, who had the most beautiful locs I had ever seen, told me that the great thing about locs was that she didn’t have to do a lot to her hair. “What, you don’t check for lint every night” I asked. She looked at me like I was crazy, then burst out into laughter. Well, without saying anything I started to understand that I was really doing more than I needed to do with my locs.
There’s nothing wrong with taking great care of your locs, but honestly everyone, I was going a bit too far. I’m sure you would laugh if I told you all of the unnecessary stuff I was doing. (smile) I’ve been locked for nine years now and looking back at myself, I’m laughing too.
The point is, we should enjoy our hair, not be controlled by it. It’s a wonderful style and it has freed us from chemical relaxers. Since we are free, we should not go back into bondage by being enslaved to our hair care regime.
